DIY Gold Leaf Ornaments

DIY Christmas Ornaments - The Monday Creative

Alright it is time to get a little Christmassy again…. These DIY ornaments are so much fun to make! Super simple and quick, and look so pretty when they are done.

Supplies

  • Clear Ornament
  • Paint
  • Gold Leaf
  • Adhesive (for the gold leaf)
  • Varnish

I buy the clear ornaments from Michaels but I found similar ones on Amazon here if you want to check them out.

For the paint I ended up mixing up a bit of a concoction. I mixed a heavy body paint with mod podge and an acrylic ink to get the right consistency. I recommend getting a fluid acrylic though and skip the mixing step because it was definitely unnecessary, I just decided to make the paint I already had work. You need a paint that is thick enough to coat the ornament but thin enough to move around since you are pouring it inside.

After you have completely coated the inside of the ornament in paint it’s time for the gold leaf. Gold leaf is pretty tedious to deal with but looks pretty cool. I have the Martha Stewart gilding sheets and gilding adhesive. All it takes is spreading a little glue, waiting till it’s tacky and then pressing the gold leaf on.

Once you are happy with how the gold leaf looks give it a little spray with a varnish and you are ready to hang it up!
