I had never heard of a visual journal till photography school. One of the first things we did in composition and design class was crack open our journals and write out three goals and I am pretty sure I was hooked from that moment. We used our visual journals in that class for our assignments but also for inspiration. One thing they don’t tell you before going to photography school is that you get so caught up in the technical side of things that creativity goes out the window so our journals were to help with that. Any photos, quotes, thoughts we came across that we liked we pasted in to the book. It was kind of like therapy in the middle of all our assignments.
I love visual journals, they are a good way to keep track of progress, work on new ideas and best of all they aren’t meant to be perfect. You can also use them in any way you wish, so a photographer might use a visual journal differently than someone who paints or writes, the whole point of them is a space for your creativity.
