Raise your hand if you’ve ever sat and stared at a blank page or blank canvas, or whatever the case may be, not knowing where to start. One of those moments where you feel like you have no creativity left.
Whether it be that you have work to do and need to find some inspiration to get you through (aka many of the long nights in photography school) or if you are just wanting to create something but don’t know where to start, I thought I would share 5 ways to find inspiration and give yourself that little push you might need to get creating.
- Go for a walk. This is probably my favourite thing to do especially if I am just staring off in to space not getting anything accomplished. I love grabbing my headphones and going for a little walk and letting my mind wander. Just don’t forget to jot down any of the ideas you come up with while you are out because there is nothing worse than getting home and not being able to remember any of your great ideas!
- Do something different. Sometimes you just need a break and I don’t mean forget all about what you are supposed to be doing, so stay creative but take a moment to do something different. Change your focus, paint instead of writing or go snap some photos instead of designing that website, whatever will give you a break but will also keep you creating.
- Be inspired by others. I love watching a YouTube video while working…and when I say video I don’t mean a funny fail blog type video I am talking something that inspires you to get to work. I tend to lean towards studio vlogs or people working on art or something. It may seem weird to watch someone else work while you are trying to work but it gives me the feeling of if they can do it why can’t I. A couple of my favourites are furrylittlepeach and bybun.
- Change your environment. If you can take your work to Starbucks or some other place like that. It gets you out of the house, or the office, but you can still get some things done and bonus is it takes away some of the distractions…like the pile of laundry that needs to be done or that super comfy bed that is calling your name for a nap. I always like to take a little list of things I need to do with me and see how much of it I can get done in an hour.
- The Pinterest scroll. This can be dangerous because you know how Pinterest is, you start out looking for painting inspiration like you are supposed to, and the next thing you know you are redecorating your room and finding new cookie recipes. Seriously though, Pinterest is one of my favourite places to go for inspiration. I love seeing what other people are coming up with and it gives me motivation to try new ideas of my own.
What do you do when you are feeling uncreative?
